Cardiff University Big Band comprises fine new jazz talent from the university scene. An auditioned band, they perform challenging, high quality jazz across the UK and are affiliated to the Cardiff University Students' Union Jazz Society.
Many University events fill the band's calendar including Students' Union awards nights and the annual Summer Ball. Recent gigs have included a joint concert with the Worcestershire Youth Jazz Orchestra and a performance at BBC Hoddinott Hall in the Wales Millennium Centre for the Lord Mayor's Charity Gala Concert. They have shared the stage with such artists as Daniel & Laura Curtis, Mark Llewelyn Evans, Giles Room Jazz, Jamie Pugh and Boyd Clack.
The band is also active on the competition and festival stages. November 2010 saw the band win a Gold Award at the South West Regional heat of the National Concert Band Festival in Monmouth. This lead to an invitation to the National Festival which took place in April 2011 at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow. The band also took to the stage of the Great North Big Band Jazz Festival at the University of Sunderland in March 2012 to perform alongside many of the UK's best youth and university bands. On August 12 2012, the band made its debut appearance at the internationally-renowned Brecon Jazz Festival.
